Trust Your Canary—Mastering the Incivility Challenge

Posted by HRDQ-U WebinarsCommunication Styles, Conflict Management Strategies, Team Building ExercisesNo Comments

Last week, we hosted a free webinar, Trust Your Canary—Mastering the Incivility Challenge, with Sharone Bar-David, author of Trust Your Canary: Every Leader’s Guide to Taming Workplace Incivility and president of Bar-David Consulting,

Over 550 people registered for this webinar. You may view the archived webinar here.

Here is what some of our participants had to say about the webinar:

“I thoroughly enjoyed the webinar. It has made me realize that I also need to change the way I respond to the behavior of others.”

“Enjoyed the information today. Plan to implement some of the strategies to address incivility in the workplace with my staff.”

There were 3 main objectives of this webinar:

  • What is incivility?
  • Why care?
  • Strategies

Using the polling function, the audience was first asked to reply to, “Have you experienced workplace incivility?”

A whopping 98% answered yes, while only 2% polled in no.

To properly understand why incivility is so dangerous for a workplace, it needs to be defined. Incivility is: seemingly insignificant behavior that is rude, discourteous, insensitive, or disrespectful, with ambiguous or unclear intent to harm the target.

Some examples of incivility can be:

  • Greeting issues
  • Eye rolling
  • Belittling of opinions, experience, skills
  • Dismissive body language, sounds
  • Cliques, gossip, social exclusion
  • RUT™— Rude Use of Technology
  • Sarcasm
  • Talking down
  • Passing blame

Why does incivility matter? What are some of some of the biggest risks? Sharone explained that there were four major factors.

  1. Personal
  2. Team
  3. Stakeholders
  4. Alignment

Next Sharone touched on three types of interventions, which are:

  1. Organizational —A way of thinking, policies, processes, hiring, PA’s
  2. Leaders’ Competencies — modeling, identification skills, action plans
  3. Team Level —Proactive action, chronic issues, staff competence
