Taking the Lead: Five Things Every Supervisor Needs to Know

Posted by HRDQ-U WebinarsCoaching Skills, Communication Styles, Human Resource Training, Supervisory SkillsNo Comments

Earlier this week, HRDQ-U and Dr. Annette Cremo hosted a free webinar called, Taking the Lead: Five Things Every Supervisor Needs to Know. Cremo is a seasoned organizational development professional with over 20 years of experience in training, organization development, and human resources. Her clients include GlaxoSmithKline, Diakon Lutheran Ministries, Microsoft, Conamaugh Health Systems, the Pennsylvania State Police and Pfizer. In addition, Dr. Cremo is an adjunct university instructor, leading graduate courses at the Pennsylvania State University, University of Scranton and Central Penn College.

Over 600 people registered to listen to the webinar live. If you missed it, you may listen here now.

So what makes a supervisor great? While there may not be a quick and simple answer to that question, there is a certain skill set that, when learned through time and exposure, make supervisors more effective. With increasing pressure being placed on supervisors to perform, organizations can’t afford a long learning curve. Supervisors need to get up to speed and fast.

People will stay in an organization because of a good supervisor and people will just as soon leave an organization because of a bad supervisor. Think about your own experience. Does that ring true for you?

The agenda for the webinar was as follows:

  • Review Five Key Supervisory Skills
  • A Proven Supervisory Skills Model
  • How to Identify a Supervisor’s Strengths and Weaknesses
  • Application: Situation and Best Action
  • Supervisory “Do’s and Don’ts”
  • Skill Improvement

Cremo began the session with a question the the participants. What makes a supervisor great? The replies came in fast and were very similar. Trust, honesty, good coach, good communicator, someone who had my back, and other answers like those. When asked if technical experience or excellent relationships makes for an excellent supervisor, the answer was excellent relationships without question.

Great supervision balances the goals of the organization with the needs of their work group. You can develop great supervisors by identifying the following:

  • WHAT they do well
  • HOW they need to be developed
  • WHERE there are performance gaps

The five skills that are key to being a good supervisor are:

  1. Guiding the Work
  2. Organizing the Work
  3. Developing Staff
  4. Managing Performance
  5. Managing Relations

Take a look at the image here to see how each skill works.
