Here is a question from the webinar.

Question: What advice would you have if much of the content to share is research data. How do you add interest to what could be boring information?

Answer: Make that data visual! For example, if you have a document full of numbers and percentages – instead of sharing the document itself show charts or pie graphs. Use your annotation tools to actively draw the audience’s attention to key points in a data-heavy presentation. Strategic builds or animations can help prevent overwhelming your audience with a data dump. From the verbal side, include anecdotes, stories or examples and analogies to add interest.

Here is a question from the webinar.

Question: Do you have recommendations for reducing the frequency of fillers (um, so, my personal favorite “…and stuff…)? I practice at least 5 times before giving a presentation, but these guys still sneak in.

Answer: There are a couple of strategies here. First, are you recording yourself when you practice? Our perception of how often we use fillers is often different than reality. Ask a trusted colleague if your fillers are indeed a distraction. Second, focus on bullet points and knowing your content – not an entire speech memorized word for word. Fillers can sneak in when we are thinking about what comes next or locked into remembering our exact words. Third, don’t beat yourself up over one or two fillers. As long as they are not used to the point of distraction, most audiences won’t discredit you for one or two slips.

Here is a question from the webinar.

Question: Can airpods or something similar be as effective as a lovelier?

Answer: This can be done, but we recommend testing this out through your bluetooth on each platform and device you may use it for. It may be clear on your phone using Skype, but not as clear on a computer connected to a different platform.

Here is a question from the webinar.

Question: What do you think about a blurred background?

Answer: Blurred backgrounds have the same risks as virtual backgrounds from a technical standpoint. If you are not lit well, there could be some portions of your head/body that become blurred as well. However, a blurred background is the better option over a distracting, unprofessional or inappropriate real background.

Here is a question from the webinar.

Question: Standing vs. Sitting?? How to get that energy like when you’re standing in front of an audience?

Answer: You can stand and present virtually if your set-up allows it. It does add more energy, but be careful you are not rocking on your feet or swaying out of frame. To boost your energy when you are sitting lean slightly forward and keep your arms in an open, confident position. Also, use your hands and gestures! Even if those gestures are below the camera line they will add energy to your delivery.
